SI Rockingham – 30th Birthday
SI Rockingham celebrated its 30th Birthday on Saturday 17th September, 2011 at Steel Tree Restaurant, Baldivis with a luncheon attended by members and guests.
SI Rockingham was chartered on 26th September, 1981 with 19 members. Three of those original members remain invested with club activities today. Jess Walker, (foundation President 1981-1984 and 1996-1998), Joan Motherwell (President 1984-1986) and Pam Moore, ex Club Treasurer. Mary Davies (President 1991-1991 and 2002) joined the club 1 year after foundation.
The first fundraising event was to raise funds for an infusion pump for the Rockingham/Kwinana District Hospital. The first prize was a microwave oven. The first of many Debutante Balls was held in 1985. Not only were they a major source of fundraising the balls gave many young women the opportunity to focus on the skills of social deportment and in doing so, build self esteem and confidence.
In 1987 the first scholarship was awarded to support a local student’s education, a tradition which remains a strong focus of our club to this day.
In 1989 Mary Davies, Jess Walker and Anne Osborne won the Community Challenge Award.
1992 – Liz Sugars, a SI Rockingham nominee won the Stella Giles Award. Our second award recipient was Steph McDonald in 2005. Steph is still an active member of our club today.
1996 our first life membership is awarded to foundation club President, Jess Walker who remains an active member today.
In 2006 the club celebrated its 25th birthday and Joan Motherwell, the foundation Vice-President is awarded a life membership.
2011 – 3 new members were inducted in SI Rockingham.
