SI of WA – November Region Meeting
The Region of Western Australia held its last meeting for 2010 at St John of God Hospice in Murdoch on Saturday. This meeting was very well attended and charges for the day were donated to the Hospice…. in all, over $600.00.
After the Business of the meeting, members were regaled by the very lively Ros Worthington OAM. She talked about her personal health problems which led to her philanthropic journey from the Make a Wish Foundation to establishing the Breast Cancer Foundation WA (now called the WA Breast Cancer Care) to her current charity “Love Angels” which aims to get Australian children to reach out and help children in 3rd world countries. Along the way she has formed a strong connection with people suffering from clinical depression, and brought along the ‘coffee table’ book of personal stories she has collated, proceeds from the sale of which will go to aid Lifeline (Living Stone Foundation WA). If anyone would like a copy ($100) please contact Lis Childs of SI Perth or me.
After a delicious finger food lunch provided by Annie Carswell and Berenice Ritchie, members watched a power point presentation by Greg Hebble, CEO of Foodbank, the NGO provider of food parcels to those in need. His facts and figures were most interesting, as not only does Foodbank provide for the needy, but it also saves our landfill sites from coping with over 2 million kg of unsaleable products each year. Greg explained their “Schools Breakfast Programme” which has been running for almost 10 years and offered clubs the opportunity to have a guided tour of their facility in Welshpool as well as access to use their Boardroom. He requested that we have a “Soroptimist Spring Clean” of our pantries and donate anything we do not want to them. Collection boxes can be found at Woolworths supermarkets and also goods can be collected by them or delivered to them. Perishable goods past the “Use by” date are not acceptable, but tinned and packaged goods just out of “Best by” date are fine. Further information from 9258 9277
