These are the Deadly Koolinga Chefs 2017 Pinjarra Senior High School After Hours Cooking Class for Indigenous students. The students prepare and cook a meal suitable to take home for their family. Subsidised by Proceeds from Melbourne Cup Lunch held at Debbie Youngman’s house. This is about the sixth group that has gone through. The kids are about 10 years old and often have a younger sibling involved and waiting until they are old enough. Mums are also encouraged to come and assist their child. Today they were making a big lasagne full of vegetables, mince, garlic, and using ricotta cheese as the white sauce. Each of the six kids took home a meal for his or her family and was very proud of the achievement.

Soroptimist International members were proud to support the Silent March Against Domestic Violence on Friday 17 November. 25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. We encourage everyone to take this on board in some way. Make a stand and say NO. Post something on Facebook or add a line to your email signature. We need to reinforce the good work that has been done so far and reduce the number of deaths and suffering from domestic violence that happens in our local communities each and every day.

A lovely meal out for the Soroptimists and the Bidi bidi jijjas. Every Monday there are cooking lessons held for young girls at the local PCYC where the Soroptimists volunteer. We thought it would be a great idea to treat the young ladies who worked super hard this year in preparing healthy home cooked meals to a meal out. Great fun was had by all, special Thanks to Eleanor, Paquita, Kate, Elizabeth and Pauline who passed on their cooking skills.

Report from Mandurah: 9 11 2017 What a fantastic evening. It came to be that Margaret Lobo our Past President of Soroptimist International was able to inform our guests about projects helping to improve the lives of women and indicate the strength of the Soroptimist network within Australia. This was followed up by our special guest Rosie Ayliffe who daughter Mia was murdered in a hostel in Nth Qld in 2016. She gave us an insight into the conditions and exploitation currently happening in Australia. Prison like conditions that can lead to a desperate mental state for those trying to attain their 88 days farm work for their 2ND year visa. This a serious problem which although Australia has laws it doesn’t seem they are enforced. Sexual exploitation can also be an issue for women. We also heard from Heather Moore from The Freedom Partnership who is supporting a modern slavery act be implemented who implored that we contact our local member of Parliament. Besides this there is the importance of integrating the international workers into our communities as much as possible. Holding barbeques or group activities with other local groups can help to create a support network. We rely on backpackers to pick our fruit. We need to keep them safe

The Albany Women’s Centre is organizing an exhibition of photographs/ posters to be shown during the second week of 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence. This world celebration is held from the 25th November to the 10th December 2017. The Campaign falls between the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Human Rights Day, and is an opportunity for our community to be involved in an event that will help create discussion, stir up action and shine a light on the increasing incidents of family and domestic violence in the Great Southern. In the lead up to 25th November, the Albany community is invited to submit photographs and/or posters, where umbrellas are used as symbols of support from agencies, organizations, family, friends and community. • Photographs/ posters can be of any colour or style and can include mixed media. • Photographs to be mounted on card of your choice. • Photographs/posters to be received by November 22nd • From pieces received, five will be selected and Show cased at various places in Albany. Drop off point is: Anglicare office in Collie Street. Next door to the Farmer’s Market. Please print your name and contact information on back of photograph/poster. SI Fremantle reported they sent six Soroptimists to produce Welcome Bags for Women's Refuges Wyn Carr House and Warrawee in Fremantle and to St Thomas Church Willagee. The bags were sewn and filled with essential toiletries and feminine items in a collaborative sewing and bag filling morning at the WA offices of Alcoa in Booragoon. A total of 117 bags were produced amid lots of laughter, mandatory morning tea and serious advocacy increasing understanding of our organisation's current projects with sixteen Alcoa employees who undertook four hours community activity time to assist others as part of their organisation's commitment for those less fortunate. Fabrics for the bags and toiletries were donated by Alcoa Staff, SI Fremantle members, volunteers at Fiona Stanley Hospital and other member contacts. This community partnership with Alcoa is now in its third year and is a wonderful opportunity to engage with like minded women, we are hopeful that we will be able to gain a few members from these activities, watch this space!! Friendship Day 2017 - On 7 October 2017 we launched Friends of SI Albany (FOSIA) with a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon tea at the Guides Hall in Albany. Joining us for the launch were past members, prospective members, current members, Girl Guides and their leaders, plus friends and family members. Old friendships were rekindled and new acquaintances made. Thanks to SI Albany members for the successful afternoon - special mention to the four Girl Guides who proficiently served the cups of tea with many refills and big smiles. Their demeanour was so friendly and we were pleased for they participated on Friendship Day.

Albany Soroptimists support Albany Women's Refuge in so many ways. Recently they made 30 toilet bags especially ordered by the refuge so they can place shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, brush and comb in for the women who often walk in with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.

Friendship Day is officially the 3rd of October to coincide with the establishment of the first Soroptimist Club in Oakland, California in 1921. This year I enjoyed our Friendship Day lunch on Sunday the 1st of October when a number of Soroptimists from around the metropolitan area came together to share lunch in a relaxed and informal setting. Each person brought a dish to the communal table. The food was fabulous, the chatter and laughter infectious. Friendships strengthened through sharing. The Sincerity of Friendship is one of our Soroptimist ideals that we pause to reflect upon on Friendship Day but we celebrate and hold dear throughout the year. Happy Friendship Day. SI On The Terrace reported: What a wonderful meeting we had yesterday 7 September. Firstly we (re) welcomed Valmae Lorraine Joyce back to the club. Valmae is the third member to leave and then come back because we are such a lovely club! (And thank you Cecile for Valmae's beautiful flowers!) Then we had Regional President Anne E. Pflugmacher Allen attend and tell us all about the upcoming Stella Giles and Friendship Day Events - and more. Thanks for making the trek from Safety Bay to be with us for a 7am meeting. And finally we had Shani Adamson, join us. Shani has just raised $13,000 for the Hamlin Fistula Clinic in Addis Abbaba - a cause very dear to our hearts - and will be going there in 10 weeks time. Art Auction Presentation SI Fremantle reported on on: Recently held the presentation night to distribute funds raised at our eight annual Help the Homeless Art Auction at Seaton College. We presented Fremantle Multicultural Centre with $12,000, Fremantle Street Doctor $12,000, The Sisters’ Place $1,500 and Starlight Hotel Choir $500. We were lucky to have as our guest speaker, Donna Shepherd, Chair of World Vision International. She gave us a first hand account of the work World Vision undertakes and tabled some statistics around women and girls including the fact that 2/3 of people living in poverty are women and 2/3 of children not in school are girls. The art auction is our largest fundraiser, which provides funds to local organisations who work with the homeless or those at risk of homelessness within the Fremantle community. Our curator Lyn DiCiero, who is a key to the success of the auction, thanked the artist without whom we would not be able to hold this wonderful event. We are lucky to have the services of Lyn who once again so creatively composed such a fine exhibition, sourcing wonderful artworks in a range of mediums. SI Fremantle auction committee chair, Roseanne Thomas, thanked auctioneer John Cook, who again gave freely of his time and also the donors and volunteers who helped both in the lead up to the event and on the night. Included in the auction this year were a 1946 hand-signed Limited Edition lithograph by Picasso, a 1923 ink drawing by Wassily Kandinsky, as well as works by collectible artists such as Hal Missingham, Elizabeth Blair Barber (aka Mrs Betty Bunning), Audrey Greenhalgh, Alan Douglas Baker, and Walter Rowbotham. Contemporary artists included Hans Arkeveld, Theo Koning, Miik Green, Stewart Scambler, Lindsay Pow, Joan Johnson, Madeleine Clear, Julie Podstolski, Shirley Clancy, Jo Darvall, Nigel Laxton, Ian de Souza and Pascal Proteau. Sponsors included Craig Mostyn Group, Hopgood Ganim, Fremantle Herald, City of Fremantle, WA Art Auctions, Ginos Panel & Paint, Spudshed, New Edition Bookshop, Bitches Brew Custom Picture Framers, Silverfern IT and Roma Cucina.

Deb and Bronwyn visited Albany Foodbank on Friday 11 August to deliver our product for 2017. For a fresh approach, we have renamed the project Christmas in July to take the pressure off our members for an end of year collection. This is our seventh participation and collections this year were significant with a total of 113 kg (equates to 226 meals) compared to 116 kg in 2016.

Pilbara Girl is an initiative of Goolarri Media (Broome) for young Indigenous women aged 16 to 25. It is about giving them the tools to realise their potential; to empower them in their endeavours; to develop their confidence to dream big and reach for the stars. It is about giving the participants the wings to fly At a Region Meeting in June 2016, we saw the immense support SI-Port Hedland gave to the program, and contacted the organisers to offer our assistance for the fashion parade showcase event to be held in Karratha in July. Two members worked backstage, and determined we would be involved in 2017. In March, we contacted Pilbara Girl organisers to offer our support, and “2016 Pilbara Girl”, Treinaya Phillips was our guest speaker in May. We donated $500 cash, and $500 in personal care items. Importantly, we gave our time, respect and encouragement to the girls, by way of transporting them to/ from venues, and as dressers for their fashion parade. We saw a transformation of 11 rather shy girls in their mid-teens when they attended their first workshop, to a group of confident young women who demonstrated a strong bond and connection to each other. We saw a young girl with a disability complete the program in an all-inclusive and supportive atmosphere. We spoke with two former "Pilbara Girls" who attest to the life changing effect the program has had, and of the lasting friendships they have developed.

A very busy and entertaining night at the dinner meeting on 25 July 2017. As July is Plastic Free July, the guest speaker was Dr Harriet Paterson who had absorbed members with her PowerPoint Presentation called “Plastics in the environment - marine”. As a club, Albany has been changing their habits towards Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, but now they have a different perspective on what is happening in our oceans. A lot of information to take on board but everyone can help – see the slide. Rosalind read SDG 14 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, marine resources for sustainable development. There was a profitable fines session which was donated to Dry July and the Albany Health Campus.

SI South Perth – R4L Update Relay for Life SISP Sunflowers Members Announced Relay for Life is just around the corner (29-30 April) and our team is up and running and has started its fundraising campaign. Thank you to our guest speaker Irene Montefiore, from the Death Café Albany. Our members gained an insight into this organisation whose objective is ‘to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. Background to the project: In 1999 as part of the celebration for 100 years of women’s suffrage in WA, the WEL WA received funding for the WEL WA Banner projects. The project’s idea came from an initiative undertaken in 1894 when the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union collected signatures for a petition on votes for women and then pasted the sheets of paper on a piece of cloth 'a mile long' for presentation to the WA Legislative Council.

Recap from 2016: 0n 7th January a huge fire destroyed the township of Yarloop 140 km south of Perth, burning down 180 houses. 6 firefighters lost their properties helping others. Soroptimist international on the terrace fundraised to donate 8 mature trees for the restoration of the memorial ground in Yarloop. Through the connection with Marbret International, a bedding wholesaler , SI OTT raised funds to purchase the mature trees and bedding for these fire fighting families. SIOTT members , their friends and Marbret were very generous with their time and donations to put these gifts together.

Recently members of Soroptimist International of Helena visited the Children's Ward at SJOG Hospital in Midland. We delivered a selection of Care Flight Bears to be given to some of the patients. SI MP reported: We celebrated International Women's Day at our club meeting on 7th March with a fine supper, a glass of bubbly, friendship and laughter. Highlight of the evening was Roni and Simon Forrest sharing stories of two strong (and bold) women in their lives - their mothers. Roni's mother (and father) brought up seventeen children in the bush in the south east of Western Australia, living in constant fear that the family would be separated under the policies of the Protector of Aborigines and the 1905 Aborigines Act. Fiercely protective they were able to prevent that from happening. Simon's mother, whom many of us met at the launch of our Reconciliation Action Plan in 2014, was forcibly removed from her family as a child. Despite this experience, at the age of 92, she is now the strong matriarch of her family. Although tinged with sadness, their stories are overwhelming about family, resilience and love.

SI Canning Districts reported - Recently our incoming Canning District Soroptimist International President Janne Parsell, presented Sophie Martorana with her Scholarship Certificate. Sophie was chosen by teachers at Kent Street SHS as the worthy recipient of this scholarship. Sophie will receive $400 each year of Year 11 & 12 to assist her in her education. Well done to Sophie who joins Jessica Bowman who was last year’s recipient. Canning District SI will continue to fundraiser to make this award possible. Thank you to all that help us help girls to be the best they can be.

NCWWA History panels will be on display at the Museum of the Great Southern, Albany Museums WA The Museum is celebrating IWD and are using NCWWA panels for this event. Albany residents and visitors will be interested in this reminder of the strength of the National Council of Women of Western Australia. SI Albany is also setting up a display at the Museum and the Tuesday Curatorial on 7 March is More Strong Women of Albany, including charter member Pam, Charter President Barbara and past member June. Being a Soroptimist allows members to travel to various clubs locally and internationally to discuss cultures and maintain friendship links. For the last 2 years SI Fremantle along with the Fremantle Multicultural Centre Outreach Service have rostered volunteers to run a Conversational English program in the Kwinana community. Between 20-30 participants attend each week during the school term at the Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre. SI members from Rockingham and Fremantle and other interested helpers work in small groups facilitating discussion on new topics each week. Participants come from many different countries and backgrounds and while the key purpose is to practice spoken English, the classes encourage social interaction, provide opportunities to make friends and assist by linking participants with other community services and groups. Many of the woman who attend are no longer eligible for free English classes as they’ve been in Australia for more than 5 years and have been unable to attend classes as they’ve been caring for children at home. For these women in particular, participating in the Conversational English classes provides a valuable connection with the community to help balance social isolation. Although no funding is provided for this program, the venue of provided free of charge by the City of Kwinana and the classes have commenced for 2017.

In the past SI Fremantle, has judged and presented a cash prize to one artist showing work in the ‘Open Minds Open Doors Exhibition' at DADDA. DADDA, a gallery space in Fremantle, supports artists suffering with mental illness. This year it was decided that Toni Avis would be the most worthy recipient of the prize. Toni has painted Red-tailed Black Cockatoos and Carnaby’s as she explores the impact of the urban sprawl and the diminishing habitat of Australia’s iconic birds. Toni brought photocopy of one of her works to show us when she was presented with her award.

Celebrating a successful year of extensive project work, SI Fremantle’s Annual Christmas Meeting was all about giving to our community. Amongst the laughter and chatter, we assembled over 30 boxes of ‘mens’ essentials and Chrismassy goodies for residents of Wilf Sergeant House. The gift boxes wrapped in Christmassy paper were gratefully received by men who are invariably invisible and often forgotten in our community.

SI Fremantle recognised the needy nature of the community and collected and donated cartons non-perishable food for their empty larder. As well as this, we wrapped and delivered cute teddy bears, toy cars and little bags of jewellery and nail polish as Christmas gifts for the parish community. At the February AGM SI Fremantle welcomed Linda Oliver as their President for 2017-18. As President Elect Linda shadowed Christine Johnson their immediate Past President. Thanks were expressed to President Christine for the fine job she managed in steering the group over the last 2 years. Linda championed the successful Public Speaking Competition at Notre Dame last year and brings to the club new energy and enthusiasm. Her role as SI National Secretary will bring a new dimension to the club. Past President Lynn Jones presented Linda with the President’s jewel. The club welcomed all officer bearers especially Sue Belton who agreed to be President Elect.

Putting the ‘Fun’ into fundraising and sharing our SI Story over a ‘Barbie’ SI Fremantle’s ongoing partnership with Seton College students has proven to be a wonderful way for us to connect with our community. Delightful, talented volunteers who undertake ‘Community Service’ commandeered the cooking, serving and money management at our final Sausage Sizzle for the 2016 year at Bunnings in Oconnor. Loads of finely sliced onions, mountains of juicy sausages and piles of fresh buns were assembled into delicious, irresistible hot dogs and served by Seton College students. After parting with their money, happy patrons squeezed lashings of sauce to suit their taste. With willing volunteers managing the production line, SI Sisters shared the stories of SI Fremantle’s work in the community. Over the long day, $1300 was raised for our 2017 Scholarship program which helps disadvantaged young women with their higher education expenses. What a wonderful fun way to share our work and promote the SI Brand in our community.

Ruti Peres spoke of her own club, their projects and the challenges they face with such a diverse population. SI President reported that Carnarvon Soroptimist members once again catered for the shire’s Australia day breakfast on Thursday 26th January. The venue was the Carnarvon yacht club which is the perfect venue for it’s beautiful outdoor area and water. We had an early start with all hands-on deck at 6am and local Rotary & Lions club members assisted once again with the cooking of the sausages, bacon & eggs. Platters of fresh Carnarvon fruit, orange juice, tea, coffee, toast & baked beans were served on long tables for guests to help themselves. Over 230 people enjoyed the sumptuous breakfast on a lovely warm summer morning. We also held a raffle, sticking to the Aussie theme, with an esky which was kindly donated by Harry Sutcliffe, 2 camper chairs, cricket set and a fly swat. Speeches and awards followed then a clean-up. Monies raised from the breakfast will go to 3 local groups: Carnarvon Sea Rescue, S.A.F.E, Church of Christ food parcels
