EveryWoman Expo Report
The Region of Western Australia booked a stand again this year at the “EveryWoman EXPO” – a huge event held in the Perth Convention Centre over 3 days in June, showcasing anything and everything to do with women. Many clubs provided members to ‘man’ the stand, and we had a very good response from women interested in our organisation. We used the Bone Densitometry Petition and a string of knickers across the front of our little stand, to attract attention and interest. Once it was clear that we weren’t trying to sell anything (not even the knickers) – and we were not a religious group! – we had great success in attracting over 350 signatures on the petition, over 50 email addresses for recipients of our new Region e-Newsletter and over 50 contacts for possible membership. Most clubs in our Region have links with a local women’s refuge and so the knickers were indicative of one of the many things we collect and donate throughout the year, and provided a good conversation starter. Our stand was also decorated with Uthando Dolls; an African project which many clubs support by making all or parts of dolls of varying sizes and shapes which are sent to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to be used in rehabilitation of young people whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS. www.uthandoproject.org
